Solar and battery in Ospringe and Preston

Two Faversham conservation areas on the edge of the town.

Terrace of red-brick Victorian houses with bay windows and slate roofs carrying black solar panel arrays under a bright overcast sky

Swale Borough Council's records on the national planning data platform list two conservation areas under the Faversham name besides the town itself: Faversham - Ospringe and Faversham - Preston-next-Faversham. The council counts both as part of the Faversham story, and both carry the usual conservation area limits.

That matters in one practical way. If your house is inside either area, panels cannot go on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, and they must be sited, so far as practicable, to minimise their effect on how the building looks. A roof slope that faces the road is not covered by the wall rule, but the council may still have a view, so we ask before we draw the layout.

Outside the conservation areas the picture is simpler. Most house roofs are permitted development, so the questions become roof direction, shade, and how much you use at night. Test solar only, solar with a battery and a battery on its own on the estimator on our home page, then ask for a survey.

What we check at your address

  • Whether your street is inside the Ospringe or Preston-next-Faversham conservation area
  • Roof direction, pitch and shade from trees
  • Where the fuse board is, so the cable run to a battery stays short

Questions about Ospringe and Preston

Can I get solar panels in Ospringe and Preston?

Most houses can. We check roof direction, shade and any conservation area, listed building or Article 4 rules for your address first. Swale Borough Council supplies records for around 50 conservation areas across the borough.

Should I choose solar only, solar and battery, or a battery only in Ospringe and Preston?

With a roof of your own, solar only is usually the best value. Solar and battery suits a home that is out in the day and busy at night, and battery only suits a home that already has solar, a cheap overnight tariff, or no usable roof. Our guide to choosing shows the sums.

How much does solar cost near Ospringe and Preston?

As of October 2026, a typical 4 kWp system costs about £5,500 to £7,500, and with a 5 kWh battery about £8,500 to £12,500. A battery alone is about £2,750 to £4,750. These are estimates, not quotes.
