Solar and battery in Faversham town centre

A market town with a conservation area to check first.

Georgian and Victorian brick townhouses with sash windows, a fanlight door and clay-tile roofs, with solar panels on two roof slopes, on a quiet market-town street

Faversham grew where its creek meets the Swale, the channel that separates mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. Its market is described as the oldest street market in Kent, dating back over 900 years, and St Mary of Charity, the parish church, has been Grade I listed since 1950. A town with that much history has a lot of protected ground.

The records Swale Borough Council supplies to the national planning data platform include a conservation area called Faversham Town. In a conservation area, panels must not be fitted to a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, though a roof slope facing the road is not covered by that rule. Listed buildings need consent, and equipment has to be sited, so far as practicable, to minimise its effect on appearance and amenity. The council can ask for more, so we check your address against its map.

Older brick houses often have a rear or side slope that is out of sight of the street, and that slope is usually where panels go. If the roof is not an option, a battery inside the house, charged on a cheap overnight tariff, still works, and a flat can use plug-in solar. We say which route fits before you spend anything.

Questions about Faversham town centre

Can I get solar panels in Faversham town centre?

Most houses can. We check roof direction, shade and any conservation area, listed building or Article 4 rules for your address first. Swale Borough Council supplies records for around 50 conservation areas across the borough.

Should I choose solar only, solar and battery, or a battery only in Faversham town centre?

With a roof of your own, solar only is usually the best value. Solar and battery suits a home that is out in the day and busy at night, and battery only suits a home that already has solar, a cheap overnight tariff, or no usable roof. Our guide to choosing shows the sums.
